Foreign workers nabbed in raid

Bandar Seri Begawan - Ops Basmi 65 yesterday morning was carried out at several cafes and restaurants in Kg Jerudong, Bangunan Wisma Setia, Bangunan Kiaw Lian and Bangunan Kedai in the capital.

The 15- immigration enforcement personnel were led by Senior Immigration Officer Hamdani Hj Abd Hamid.

A Filipino sponsored as a cleaner was caught serving food to a customer at a restaurant. She was issued with a special pass for further questioning as her conduct violated section 15 (2) of the Immigration Act.

Her Filipino colleague, on a 14-day social visit pass since August 10, was caught doing some work in the kitchen. She was taken to the enforcement office.

An Indonesian kitchen helper at the same restaurant was issued with a special pass for further screening. Her pass had expired September 30 last year.

A 42-year-old Indonesian woman at the cashier area of another restaurant in the same building was issued with a special pass for further questioning. She was found under the sponsorship of a different company.

Two other Indonesian women caught working at separate restaurants in Wisma Setia were also issued with special passes. One is believed to be holding a social visit pass, while the other was found to be under a different sponsorship.

Another Filipino caught working at Wisma Setia restaurant is on a 14day social visit pass since August 13.

At a restaurant on Jalan Sultan, an Indian national was seen selling cigarettes. He tried to evade arrest by pretending to be a customer. He was found to be sponsored as a body repairman at a workshop. He was brought to the enforcement unit.

An Egyptian was compounded $100 after he was caught at a rented room in a shophouse in Kg Jerudong. He had been issued a special pass by the Social Visit Section pending purchase of his ticket to return to Egypt.
