By M K Anwar

Bandar Seri Begawan - The police have busted one of the biggest car theft syndicates in the country leading to the arrest of eight Bruneian suspects including teenagers.

The House Break-in and Car Theft Investigation Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department, Royal Brunei Police Force has managed to solve 42 cases of car thefts that have been reported since January this year.

The eight suspects were successfully apprehended with cooperation from members of the public and due to the determined efforts of police personnel from the Tutong and BSB Police Stations.

In the first seven months of the year, I12 cases of stolen cars were reported from all four districts. Last month alone, the House Break-in and Car Theft Investigation Unit has arrested 16 men in connection with various thefts.

The cars that were reported missing were mostly stolen from parking areas of RIPAS Hospital, Kiulap, Gadong, Jalan Kota Batu and some in Belait District.

their valuable spare parts including wheels. Even the petrol in their tanks was sucked dry before the vehicles were abandoned at several locations or by the side of the roads.

Some of the stolen cars were also found to have been burned in secluded areas before being sold as scrap metal.

One of the cars with a fake registration number was believed to have been used by the syndicate.

The police reminded car owners not to leave their cars unlocked or with the engine running while they run errands. Besides being stolen from parking areas, it was revealed that a car was stolen when the owner had left the engine running while he was buying a pack of cigarettes.

The unit also said that eight other local men have also been apprehended in connection with several thefts of gas cylinders, electrical equipment, scrap metals and bicycles. All the 16 men are aged between 17 and 25 years.

Also within the last seven months, the unit said it had made 23 arrests and at the same time solved 25 other theft related cases.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
