Braille Course For Sight-Impaired
Students

Begawan - In an effort to help visually-impaired students, a
course to on how to use the Braille code and Brailer Perkins was
launched recently.
The course was conducted by the
Special Education Unit, Ministry of Education and involved 12 teachers
from several government schools who have passed the Braille Competency
test from the New Zealand Royal Foundation for the Blind and are
qualified Braille teachers.
Course coordinator, Cikgu Hj Roslan
Hj Zulkefli, from the Unit said currently there are eight students
across the country who have sight problems and they are following the
course held every Thursday and Saturday throughout August, at the
Special Education Unit in Gadong.
He added that such courses are being
planned for the future to aid more students who have similar problems
to better understand Braille, including their parents and teachers.
He conveyed his thanks to Standard
Chartered Bank who sponsored the examination fees for all teachers
sitting for the exams.
A teacher from Sekolah Menengah PAP
Rashidah Lumut, Chin Shao Meng, said that only one student from a
non-government school joined the course. The student has blurred
vision and is wearing a 1,000-degree spectacles.
Chin is the only teacher from the
Belait district selected to teach two groups of primary and secondary
schools.
The teachers had previously taken the
two-week exam with the passing mark of 90 per cent and above.
According to him, the introductory course should be followed at an
early stage to gain more knowledge and skills that are useful for
parents, teachers and students. --
