Local Man Gets Five Years, Cane For Theft

Bandar Seri Begawan - A local man was sentenced to five years' imprisonment with three strokes of the cane at the Bandar Magistrate's Court yesterday after he pleaded guilty to stealing and committing mischief onto an unoccupied house of a British diplomat in Jalan Kota Batu last month.

The defendant, Abdul Aziz bin Hj Aji/Ali, 32, who was recently released from prison after having served a four-year prison sentence for the same related offence, admitted to stealing one cordless phone, two watches and one black leather belt and to committing mischief by causing loss to the amount of B$250 to the said house.

The prosecuting officer, Joe Chan said the defendant broke the gate of the said house with a pair of pliers and went to the back of the residence and forced the back door open by kicking it. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
