Maths Teachers Exposed To Fresh Way Of Teaching
By Azaraimy HH

Bandar Seri Begawan - Some 100 junior and junior high school mathematics teachers from public and private schools attended a mathematics workshop yesterday where they were exposed to a hands-on method of teaching to make learning more effective.

The workshop, held at the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah complex, was conducted by Geoff White of Edith Cowen University, Perth, Australia.

Also in attendance was Acting Director of the Department of Schools, Ministry of Education Dayang Hajah Norjum binti Haji Yusop, the guest of honour.

The workshop was organised by Paul and Elizabeth bookstore and supported by Budding Readers and RIC Group in Australia.

The aims of the method, said Margaret Son of Budding Readers, were to show children that mathematics can be fun, while helping them build confidencee in their mathematical abilities.

The hands-on method is a pervasive technique to teach students in a number of topics including number patterns.

According to Son, Geoff White believes mathematics must be taught using hands on method instead of relying on textbooks. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
