Friday Sermon Highlights
Adversities Of Smoking
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Many people still ignore no smoking signs at
government premises and public places, Imams said in the Friday sermon
yesterday, expressing disappointment at "these selfish people who
don't care about others around them, although campaigns and warnings
on the dangers of smoking to health have been widespread".
Imams lamented in their sermon that
smokers can be seen in many places, even in non-smoking areas, RTB
reported yesterday.
"The sad thing is that they show no
concern to people close-by, even though they know the smoke from their
cigarettes is harmful to their neighbours," the Imams said.
"While- smoking does not kill
immediately; it's very harmful because cigarettes contain several
toxins."
"Whether it is done fast or slowly,
suicide or taking one's own life is a big sin," they added.
Also highlighted in the sermon were
people who make excuses such as having relatives who died of cancer
but never smoked, or grandparents who smoke but are still healthy in
their late age.
The prayer leader responded in the
sermon that there are various types of cancer, not all which are
caused by smoking.
"However, findings by medicals
experts show that nine out of ten persons who suffer lung cancer are
smokers or ex-smokers. Thus, this is strong proof that smoking is very
harmful." --
