Call For Monitoring System To
Check Prices
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Local consumers called for the setting up of an
effective monitoring system to check against indiscriminate price
hikes by traders as the nation continues to see an increase in the
prices of imported commodities brought about by a hike in
transportation charges.
Consumers said the price hikes are
higher for commodities that are imported from faraway places like US
as a result of the soaring oil prices.
Consumers said that since the festive
seasons are coming, a monitoring system should be put in place to stop
traders from increasing the prices of goods, especially at village
groceries.
Since it is expected that the world
oil prices will continue to soar, actions must be taken to ensure
businessmen will not simply increase the prices of goods," they said.
They said because of an increase in
the prices of goods, consumers are losing their purchasing power.
"We hope consumers will not purchase
expired canned products which are being sold cheaply at village
groceries just because they felt they could not afford valid
foodstuffs which are sold at higher prices," they said.
The Borneo Bulletin made a random
survey at local groceries and saw prices of commodities were up
between 10 and 30 percent. Brunei Darussalam imports more than 90
percent of its food items from foreign countries. --
