By James Ken
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The students of St Andrew's School may be the envy of
other schools in the country as they had the privilege to take a
closer look at the USS Paul Hamilton (DDG 60), one of the United State
Navy's most sophisticated ships.
Yesterday afternoon, 43 students and
four teachers, led by Mrs Zachariah, were welcomed by the public
affairs officer, Lt Greg Flores. Miss Laura Thomas from the US embassy
was also on hand to accompany the students.
The visitors were divided into two
groups and were give a tour onboard the USS Paul Hamilton by Miss Kate
and Mr Chris Green.
During the tour, the students had the
opportunity to take a closer look at some of the weaponry of the USS
Paul Hamilton, such as caliber gun mount, missile launchers, torpedo
tube and state-of-the-art radar system. They also toured the bridge
and control room of the ship.
Named after the honourable Paul
Hamilton, the USS Paul Hamilton is part of the four US Navy ships
participating in the Brunei Phase of the 2005 edition of the
Cooperation Afloat Readiness And Training (CARAT) exercise series.
Other US Navy ships that are joining the exercise are USS Harpers
Ferry, USS Safeguard and USS Rodney M Davies.
The aim of the CARAT is to exercise
skills with participating nations that contribute to the fight against
sea borne threats and transnational crimes at sea.
To cap off the visit, students had a
group photo taken in front of the massive ship with an official from
the USS Paul Hamilton. --
