Kuala Belait Bank Says No Problem
In Accepting Singapore Notes
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A bank officer said his establishment will continue
to accept Singapore currency deposited at their branches amidst
charges by shopping establishments in Kuala Belait that the bank has
refused to accept Singapore dollars.
The bank officer told the Bulletin
that there has been no instruction for his branches to stop accepting
Singapore currencies.
"We have the right to refuse to
accept torn or disfigured Singapore dollars only," he said.
The Bulletin received calls from
consumers in Kuala Belait that some commercial establishments there
refused to accept Singapore dollars over the past few days.
"I went to several shops in Kuala
Belait and they have all refused to accept Singapore currencies even
though they are in good condition.
"Their reason for not accepting the
currency was because their banks would reject them," they said.
Brunei Darussalam and Singapore
signed an agreement on June 9, 1967, which allows currencies from the
two countries to be used interchangeably at par. --
