Man Jailed Four Months For Threats
Against Wife
By Rol Ezam
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A father of two children was sentenced to four months
imprisonment by the Bandar Magistrate's Court yesterday after he
pleaded guilty to committing criminal intimidation by threatening his
father-in-law with injury to his daughter (defendant's wife at the
time of the offence).
The court heard the defendant, Pg
Anak Noorshahrolizam bin PgAnak Omarali, 34, who has previous
convictions under the Misuse of Drugs Act, angrily telephoned his
father-in-law (complainant) who was at work, asking for the
whereabouts of his wife and two young children. The complainant told
the defendant to calm down and said that he did not know where they
were.
After the call, the complainant felt
concerned for his daughter and grandchildren's safety and immediately
rushed home. When he got there, nobody was at home.
The court heard that the defendant
arrived at the house after 12pm. The complainant saw him go upstairs
and come down a short while later with a machete in his hand. On
seeing this, the complainant quickly tried to calm the defendant down.
The defendant angrily shouted that he
was going to look for his wife and warned that he would cause harm to
his wife or to any person who had helped his wife and his children to
leave him if he found them, the court was told.
Upon seeing the machete and hearing
the defendant's threatening words, the complainant became alarmed and
concerned for his daughter and grandchildren's safety. He tried to
stop the defendant from leaving but also feared harm to himself in
view of the defendant's temper and the machete in the defendant's hand
at the time. The defendant then got into his car and sped off.
Not knowing what to' do, next, the
complainant nervously waited for the defendant to return. The
complainant also tried to contact his daughter by calling her mobile
phone to warn her of the defendant's actions but to no avail.
When the defendant did not return
home, the complainant went to the Berakas Police Station to report the
incident as he was fearful that something bad might happen to his
daughter and grandchildren.
On the same day of the offence,
officers from the Narcotics Control Bureau raided the house and
arrested the defendant who had by then returned home. The NCB called
the Berakas police to come as they had found several weapons including
a samurai sword and knives in the defendant's upstairs living room. A
machete was also recovered from the defendant's car.
The case was conducted by Deputy
Public Prosecutor Zelda Skinner who was assisted by DPP Christopher
Ng. --
