Arabic Language Course For Primary School Tutors
By Jon Tampoi

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Arabic language is taught in schools not only due to its religious importance but also its global significance whereby the language is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world.

These remarks were made by the Guest of Honour, Pg Dato Paduka Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohammad bin Pg Hj Abd Rahman, Deputy Education Minister, at the opening ceremony of the National Training Session for Arabic Language Trainers at Primary level.

Arabic language lessons began as early as the 1950's and further developments by the 1990's saw the establishment of Arabic-based institutions by both the government and private sector. Presently Universiti Brunei Darussalam is also offering the language through its language centre.

In line with the demand for learning the language, various efforts have been initiated, including this seminar which will present two lecturers, one of whom is Dr Abbas Sadri, a representative of ISESCO of the United Nations.

The seminar will run from August 8-13 and is aimed at training tutors from primary schools.

The training, among others, will focus on fast learning and training techniques as well as the development of the participants' knowledge in the subject.

A total of 123 participants from primary schools are attending the five-day seminar, which is organised by the Curriculum Development Department and the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation of the United Nations (ISESCO) in cooperation with the World Islamic Call Society (WICS).

The national seminar also aims to develop an education curriculum that is based on the needs of the students of Brunei Darussalam.

The closing ceremony will be on August 13 at the same venue - the Regional Centre SEAMEO- VOCTECH in Gadong. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
