floating in Brunei waters suspected to have been thrown by smugglers
in a bid to make a quick getaway before being caught red-handed.

The 84 cartons of Tiger beer were
found floating in Brunei waters yesterday undetected by anyone
until a suspicious fisherman alerted the authorities who swooped
in on the illicit cargo, believed to have been thrown from an
express boat coming to Brunei from Labuan. They were quickly
retrieved by Royal Brunei Customs men who were alerted on their
hotline.
An enforcement officer from the
Preventive and Intelligence branch of the Royal ;Brunei Customs
and Excise department observed that it may be a new technique used
by desperate smugglers to bring contraband into the country
unnoticed by authorities. The officers said they received the
tip-off around 10.15 am yesterday that something was thrown into
the waters of Ujong Sapoh in Muara.
"The beer wrapped in completely
in black plastic bags in was floating at sea when we arrived
retrieved," he said.

enforcement officers from the
Fisheries department seized some 878 kilograms of undeclared fish
brought to the country from the neighbouring state on Thursday.
Five lorries registered in Kudat,
Sipitang and Lawas used to transport the fish were stopped in the
operation, conducted from 9am to 9pm. Some 29 officers took part
in the operation. They were stopped between Kuala Lurah control
post and Gadong fish market.
The fish include 'Rumahan', 'Belanak',
`Bekulan' and 'Bekalang'. The Custom officer said 'Rumahan' is
banned from entering the country due to the current red tide
phenomenon. |
If found guilty, the offenders could
face a maximum fine of $8,000. The Customs welcomed tip-off members of
the public should they come across any smuggling activities. They
could call them on the hand phone: 8714422 or office: 2382422. --
