Thai Woman Detained Over Misuse Of Employment Pass
By Liza Mohd

Bandar Seri Begawan - A Thai woman was issued with a special pass following a surprise raid by Belait Immigration Enforcement Section yesterday.

She was allegedly caught misusing the employment pass issued to her as a housemaid.

The suspect was found staying with her husband and upon investigation, it was discovered that she is not officially engaged to work as a housemaid with the employer as stated in the employment pass issued to her.

The misuse involves 'buying a quota' whereby a foreigner purchases an employment quota from a local just to be in the country for a long period for purposes such as staying with her spouse who is working in the country. This is an offence under the immigration and labour laws.

The suspect now faces deportation, it was learnt. A total of 79 foreign workers from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, India and Philippines were questioned during the operation by Belait immigration officials on Tuesday night at five rented houses and workers quarters in Telisai, Sungai Liang and Seria.

The operation codenamed 'Ops Basmi 56' was conducted by 11 immigration officials led by Acting Chief Immigration Officer Rosli bin Hj Kifrawi from 10.30pm till after midnight. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
