Beware Of Fake Visa Stamps
By CT Hj Mahmod
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Beware of shady agents who offer their so-called
services to get visas or `chops' to process work permits as foreign
workers who fall for it may end up being slapped with a hefty fine for
forgery.

Thirteen Indian nationals Working in
the country have fallen victim to the scam after allegedly paying
a "mysterious lady" B$100 to $200 for each chop.
One of the victims said he only
found out it was a forged chop when immigration officials
confiscated his passport following an inspection. He has been told
to pay a fine ofB$1,500.
Officials at the Indian High
Commission in Brunei confirmed to the Borneo Bulletin that the
victimised group had approached them last Monday to seek their
assistance.
A top Immigration officer
acknowledged visa and stamp forgery does exist in the country.
"People should not hand over
their passports to any unauthorised person but should instead come
to the Immigration Department," he said.
"It is an offence under the
Immigration Act to have a forged chop in the travel |

document," he said and further
advised passport holders to take more precautions as it is their
responsibility to do so.
There is a possibility that many
such fraudulent agents are doing the rounds looking for gullible
foreign workers. The Philippine Embassy here also said that two
Filipinos were brought to court last week for forged visas. |
The "mysterious lady" according to an
Indian victim works with a male partner who is the alleged middleman
and brings passports for visa stamps.
Another issue of concern is flyers
found at many shopping complexes that lure foreign workers with visa
stamps to Kota Kinabalu and Kuching, thereby skipping the Immigration
Department.
The dubious flyers read "Stamping
Visa to KK and Kuching for workers from Indonesia, Philippine,
Thailand and other countries", and even provides a contact number
should anyone be interested.
According to an official source such
advertisements offering `visas' are considered illegal. --
