By James Kon
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A Kim Engineering became the first casualty of the
Sultan's Birthday Cup Basketball Championships when they were dumped
out at the quarterfinals stage after losing to Teo and Sons Workshop
85-60 at Chung Hwa Middle School on Monday night.
It was the second successive loss for
A. Kim Engineering after having earlier lost to Mum's Bakery, pushing
them out of contention for the semifinal spot.
While the win had given a lifeline to
Teo and Sons to qualify for the semifinals, they must beat Mum's
Bakery in the next match-up on Wednesday evening with a big score.
Both teams started off cautiously but
it was A. Kim Eng who were the early aggressors.
A. Kim Engineering captain No. 9 Jess
Dejesus was the driving force for his team. His eight-point
contribution and numerous rebounding effort paid off as Kim
Engineering led 22-14 at the end of the first quarter.
The tug-of-war match-up carried on
into the second quarter but Kim Eng still continued to lead 37-31.
The third quarter was the crucial
turning point for Teo & Sons when No. 6 Yap Chung Ping came on from
the bench to sink 13 points in 10 minutes and assisting him in front
was forward No. 8 Edmond Tan who played a remarkable role in the game.
The duo pushed Teo & Sons to take the
lead 58-46 at the end of the third quarter.
Kim Eng were on a self-destruct mood
and their defence collapsed in the fourth quarter.
Teo
and Sons took advantage of the situation and went on to win the
allimportant game.
In another game, Mum's Bakery
qualified for the semifinals when they defeated ABMS Tinkerbell 92-86.
It was
Mum's second successive win in the
quarterfinal stage. Today, Mum's Bakery will play Teo and Sons
Workshop while Kim Eng will square off with ABMS Tinkerbell. --
