Raising Awareness On The Archive
Act
By James Kon
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A briefing on `Awareness on the Role and Function of
Archive Act' was yesterday participated by 20 police and civilian
personnel from the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF).
Present at the Royal Brunei Police
Headquarter Logistic Building to deliver the briefing was Dayang Hajah
Fatimah binti Haji Aji, the acting head of Archive Officers, Brunei
Darussalam National Archive, Department of Museums.
Among the topics highlighted were the
roles and functions of the National Archive Act of 1975, amended in
1983, in which records of historical value (25 years or older) should
be moved to the Brunei National Archive.
In reference to the Archive Act, the
department will be responsible for collecting and safely conserving
the public records of the government of His Majesty.
In light of this, Dayang Hajah
Fatimah binti Haji Aji expressed hopes that all government agencies
would cooperate with the Brunei National Archive by handing over
public records that are of historical value.
Documents, plans, maps, printing
materials, photographers, video, films, microfilms and paintings are
some of the public records that may need to be conserved.
Dayang
Hajah Fatimah went on to add that under Section IV, Para 10 of the
Archive Act, no officer in the government office is permitted to
destroy or change any public records without the approval from the
Brunei Darussalam Archive.
Under Section IV, Para 11 of the
Archive Act, a director is allowed to destroy any records that are
deemed to be of no historical value or not essential for references in
any government offices. --
