BSP Strikes Oil & Gas
By CT Hj Mahmod
Seria
- Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) has discovered more oil and gas
following a successful exploration expected to yield "good reservoir
quality" in a new structure in the Seria North Flank.
This is the second successful finding
in the mature Seria field, following the first discovery made at S-829
last September in the same area but in a different structure.
However, the approximate TCF
(trillion cubic feet) and barrel terms of gas and crude were not
available as a BSP official said it is too early to determine them.
BSP
said it is proceeding with plans to fast track further exploration,
appraisal and development of the area and added that it will drill
more wells in this area.
BSP's
Managing Director, Mr Grahaeme Henderson, in a statement yesterday,
said, "This is an exciting and very important discovery for Brunei,
representing a new milestone in the history of the Seria Field, an
existing oil and gas field.
"Oil and associated gas were found in
a section approximately 140 metres of net sands with good reservoir
quality.
"We are currently evaluating the
options to produce from this area to maximise the commercial
opportunity for Brunei," he added.
The well was drilled four kilometres
offshore in nine metres of water by the self-propelled multipurpose
drilling rig known as the BIMA.
More than 2,000 metres of open hole
section was drilled, which is a record in BIMA's drilling history.
The BIMA drilling rig will now
continue to drill at least two more Seria North Flank structures this
year. In 2006, plans are afoot to drill a further five wells.
BSP
has been continuously undertaking efforts to optimise production from
its mature field including the Seria field, which has been in
production since 1929.
The Seria North Flank is one of the
new fields that BSP is focusing in accelerating its development.
This is in line with one of the four
strategies in BSP, mature oil growth, in view of the large portfolio
of hydrocarbon resources in Brunei Darussalam.
The strategies are underpinned by the
company's utmost priorities on safety, people and performance.
An Asia Pacific oil and gas
newsletter dated October last year stated the Seria North Flank is a
very important discovery because there are up to 20 similar structures
in `his area, which is estimated to yield a total recoverable oil of
up to 100 million barrels. -- Courtesy of Borneo
