By Azaraimy HH
Bandar Seri
Begawan - For the first time Brunei will be joining 14 other
Asian countries for the Cricket Under17 Cup in Malaysia from Aug 5-13,
President of Brunei Cricket Association, Hj Abdul Wahab bin Hj Tengah
said on Sunday during the certificate presentation to umpires and
scorers.
"The Brunei team do not expect too
much of the upcoming tournament but nonetheless it will be an
excellent venue for the under- 17 team to gauge their progress
relative to other participating countries," he added
Around 18 technical and management
members of the Brunei Darussalam Cricket Association received
certificates after completing an umpire and scorer course to further
beef up the sport in the country.
The guest-of-honour, the High
Commissioner of Great Britain, Mr John Savilla presented the
certificates at the ceremony.
The course was sponsored by the Asian
Cricket Council, as one of the council's itineraries during the year
and hosted by Brunei Darussalam National Cricket Association (BDCA)
from July 26-3 1.
It was conducted by an experienced
cricketer and world class umpire KT Francis, a resource staff official
from the Asian Cricket Council.
Also on attendance was Hj Abdul Wahab
and Director of Technical Education, Haj i Mohd Daud bin Haji Mahmud.
Haji
Abdul Wahab congratulated the participants and thanked in particular
the ACC and KT Francis for bringing the course to Brunei.
He said, as far as cricket in Brunei
is concerned, the sport is doing pretty well, despite his
acknowledgement that only around 15% of the members are locals.
He said various institutions are now
taking part to make the sport as one of their ECA to make the game
popular.
He also thanked the Department of
Youth and Sports for supporting the game in Brunei and RBA for giving
their support for the Under-17 team.
BDCA
Chief Executive Officer, ManzurAhmed said the association has renewed
its structure this year with an appointment of president, deputy
president, CEO, treasurer and various management and technical
personnel, necessary to make the association run more professionally,
efficiently and effectively.
He also said the association is
getting its second training venue or field in MTSSR College, besides
the main venue in Jalan Ong Sum Ping.
He said the association has gained a
lot of supports and sponsorship from the ACC. Other sponsors are
needed; this is because there are restrictions to what ACC can allow
them.
The association is trying to meet its
objectives to produce more locals for the under- 16, 17 and 19 teams
and aiming to achieve close to 100% local players by 2008. --
