Robotics Team Does MTSSR Proud

Bandar Seri Begawan – Recently, a team of robotics enthusiasts from Sultan Saiful Rijal Technical College (MTSSR) presented their robotics technology inventions at the Convention on Education & Professionalism for 'Majlis Ilmu 2005', which was held at the ICC, Berakas.

The significant event was also graced by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam. His Majesty toured the exhibition booth and consented to autograph the book that was presented to him by a robot.

The technology that was invented by the team of eight students and staff members from the Electrical and Electronics Engineering (Communication) Department uses infrared technology that can also be reprogrammed to adapt any sequential movements, said Mr Anil Kumar of MTSSR.

One robotics presentation that was prepared by the robotics team in cooperation with the Mechanical Department of the college was a manually operated robot that dispenses balls similar to the machine used in tennis practice.

Meanwhile other robotics demonstrations included the Micro mouse and Gladiator robots that were also recently presented in the Robotech Competition 2005.

According to Mr S Tong, one of the staff members in the Robotics team, the students and facilitators have created the robots during their school ECA hours and free periods.

The materials used in building the contraption mainly derived from reusable materials while some items are imported from the States, he added.

"By presenting the robotics invention at the exhibition we hope to grab the attention of younger students towards technology and to help them build an interest in robotics," said Mr Anil Kumar.

In the long run the college hopes to build more machines using the robotics concept, which is able to feature wireless technology, or even image processing characteristics, he added.

"In the meantime we hope that the robotics technology will be added into the technical syllabus to enhance the interest of robotics technology for students and encourage them to compete in various robotics competitions in the regional arena," he said.

"Students at the college in general have already shown a great interest in the technology, which is a good sign of future robotics development in the country," he added. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
