Retirees Urged To Go Into Trading Business
By Rosli Abidin Yahya

Bandar Seri Begawan – Retirees may go into trade and entrepreneurship to upgrade their image and socio-economic standing, the Minister of Religious Affairs said in his address at the opening ceremony of the 4"' Annual General Meeting of the Ex-Civil Servants (PEKIRA), which was held Sunday morning at the PGGMB Building in the capital.

However, Pehin Dato Dr Ustaz Haji Awang Mohd Zain bin Haji Serudin, the guest of honour, warned that entrepreneurship was not easy and needed relentless efforts, good management and experience as well as good planning.

He said the most important traits for businessmen were honesty and sincerity, especially for those who were given the responsibility to run businesses by members of an association such as PEKIRA.

"Members can join forces with experienced members of PEKIRA to build up a business empire to help upgrade the socio-economic standing of its members," he said.

The Religious Affairs Minister stressed the importance of honesty and sincerity if the association wishes to emulate the corporate success story of-a few large organisations.

"Honesty and sincerity must be made your friends, promises must be delivered and debts must be settled," he said.

The president of PEKIRA Pg Dato Paduka Hj Jaludin bin Pg Mohd Limbang meanwhile urged members to come up with worthwhile plans for projects to upgrade the socio-economic standing of its members.

He said at present PEKIRA has formed a new company - the Ikatan Teluk Mewah Sdn Bhd (ITM) - to run a petrol station in Kg Mentiri, a project which may commence in mid 2005.

At the meeting, members also discussed ways to increase and attract new members currently standing at approximately 300 ex-civil servants. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
