Bid Thumb Still Unbeaten
By James Kon
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Big Thumb remained to be the only unbeaten team in
the Sultan Cup Basketball Tournament when they came out on top against
Komala 89-75 in a grudge Group A match at the Chung Hwa Middle School
on Monday night.
Big Thumb's No 12 player Jomar Tierra
was outstanding with his big shots and great reaction scoring a game
high 50 points.
Its coach Nanolita Abat said both
sides were equally balanced with three import players but his players
showed their maturity and rose to the occasion.
The scoreline didn't reflect the
closely-contested match in the first and second quarter of the game
where Big Thumb was unable to stretch their lead to double digits.
In the first quarter, Big Thumb was
off to a 21-13 lead after an impressive run that saw Jomar putting in
18 points. But Komala were able to crawl back into the game thanks
largely to some sloppy defence and numerous turnovers by Big Thumb
players
By the end of the first quarter, Big
Thumb lead was cut to 23-21.
The second quarter started with the
same fashion with both teams fighting hard to take charge. At one
point, both teams were tied on 31 points but Big Thumb were able to
capitalise on the scoring chances and again took the double digit lead
49-37 before the interval.
Big Thumb never looked back after the
interval and cruised to another win to take top spot in the table.
The win certainly raised the morale
of Big Thumb and is now regarded as the hot favourites to capture the
Sultan Cup. In another match-up, Winang Trd beat Titans 52-39 in a low
scoring affair.
Today, Fitness Zone will take on
Winang Trd at 7.15pm while Coffee Zone will square off against
Kianggeh PB at 9.00pm. --
