Brunei, Malaysia on Joint Dragnet
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Brunei and Malaysia have agreed to further enhance
their bilateral cooperation in combating the misuse of drug and drug
smuggling activities.
This was reached during the 9th
bilateral meeting between the Brunei Narcotic Control Bureau and the
Narcotic Department of the Royal Malaysian Police yesterday.
At the meeting, both parties also
agreed to continuously expand the scope of cooperation in combating
the menace.
Dayang
Hajah Shireen Haji Mustapha, Brunei's Deputy Director of Narcotic
Control Bureau, said the cooperation includes treatment and
rehabilitation, drugs prevention education as well as upgrading the
bilateral cooperation towards its implementation.
According to her, the meeting touched
on drugs prevention education which is more towards giving awareness
to the community on the danger and risks posed by drug abuse.
In this matter, the Narcotics Control
Bureau will try to determine methods and approaches employed in other
regions, she said.
She said that matters relegated to
treatment and rehabilitation were also discussed at the meeting to
determine the possibility of looking into other methods, which might
be more effective.
Meanwhile, Dato Mohd Najib, the
Director of Narcotics of the Royal Malaysian Police, said both
agencies have further enhanced cooperation in combating the misuse of
drugs.
He said both agencies have
implemented cooperation on exchanging suitable intelligence
information and joint operations by both parties, especially at the
common borders.
Elaborating further on the joint
operations, Dato Mohd Najib said that such joint operations were not
conducted in Brunei.
According to him, when Brunei's NCB
conducted an operation in its side, the Malaysian Narcotics will
conduct a separate operation simultaneously on the other side of the
boarder.
By doing so, any suspects who manage
to escape across the border, narcotics officers on the other side will
be waiting.
Awang
Haji Abdul Majid Mangarshah, Acting Director of Narcotic Control
Bureau, and Dato Mohd Najib Abdul Aziz, the Director of Narcotic of
the Royal Malaysian Police, jointly chaired the meeting.
Senior officials from agencies of
both countries took part in the meeting.
The meeting deliberated ways to
standardise actions in the eradication of drug abuse and in combating
