Brunei Remains Free Of Bird Flu
Says Task Force
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Brunei remains free of the bird flu phenomenon.
This announcement came following the
recent recurrence of the disease in Thailand and Vietnam.
However, there have been no new cases
of bird flu to be found in humans.
In a statement, the Ministry of
Health wishes to reassure the public that appropriate steps are being
taken to monitor and detect the disease in the Sultanate.
The second meeting of the National
Task Force on Zoonotic Diseases met yesterday in order to determine
the current status and to further intensify surveillance, control and
prevention of zoonotic diseases, especially bird flu or avian flu.
The meeting was co-chaired by the
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health and the Permanent
Secretary at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources.
Meanwhile, the Department of
Agriculture is also continuing its monitoring activities at poultry
farms, including back yards and pet shops.
Inspections at entry posts have also
been tightened.
Brunei is still enforcing import
restrictions from affected countries.
The Ministry of Health and the
Department of Agriculture will constantly liaise with the World Health
Organisation (WHO) to obtain latest updates of the disease and any
guidelines issued in the matter.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs has
also taken appropriate steps in ensuring Brunei remains free of the
disease by encouraging Muslims to say special prayers before Friday
prayers.
Currently, there are no travel
restrictions to affected areas.
However, if it is necessary, poultry
and livestock markets should be avoided.
The public is urged to maintain
personal hygiene, especially poultry farmers.
