Kuala Belait – His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan of Brunei, made a surprise visit to Mukim Labi and Belait town yesterday.

The visit was aimed at reviewing the development and progress in these areas.

His Majesty's visit to Mukim Labi began at the Orang Kaya Pemancha Berandai Primary School in Bukit Sawat.

This was followed by a visit to the Merangking Primary school.

On arrival at the school, His Majesty was greeted by the school's headmaster.

From the Multi Purpose Hall, His Majesty visited the Chung Hwa Primary School, the only Chinese school in the Mukim.

The school began its operation in 1946.

A total of 40 pupils are currently studying at the school from pre-level to primary six under the guidance of nine teachers. Thirty-five per cent of its students are Malays.

His Majesty's next stop was the Labi Primary school.

The development of educational institutions in the country is His Majesty's government main priority, with a large sum of money being allocated for the purpose.

Here, His Majesty toured several classrooms, the dining hall and kitchen.

The students here still enjoy the feeding scheme.

The school has also carried a day-long pioneer scheme since May last year and joined the integrated school system early this year.

Seventy-eight students are currently studying in the school from pre-level to primary six under the guidance of 17 teachers.

The Sultan then visited the Labi Health centre.

The centre was established in 1958 and was known as Labi Clinic.

It was upgraded to Health Clinic upon the completion of its new building in 2002.

The centre offers various services, including outpatient treatment and dental.

The centre is manned by 10 staff, including a doctor.

Here, the Brunei Monarch witnessed the Belait District Officer undergoing blood pressure and sugar level test.

His Majesty also visited the Labi Police station.

The station, which has existed since 1967, plays an important role in securing the peace and security in the areas.

The station is manned by 26 police personnel, including a senior officer-in-charge.

From Labi, His Majesty visited the Belait Town.

One of the places visited by His Majesty was the Bumiputera Building, which lies in the heart of the Belait Town.

This was His Majesty's second visit to the building in a year.

His Majesty last visited the town in August last year. The building was designed for local entrepreneurs to run their business.

The four-storey building houses shops and offices.

According to the Municipal Board department, all 25 shops have been occupied.

He also visited several shops located nearby and mingled with members of the public. Some even stop their car to greet their beloved ruler.

His Majesty wrapped up his visit to the town by visiting a restaurant managed by a local entrepreneur, Sharifah Maimunah.

The restaurant known as Serikandi has 20 workers.

The visit, which began at around 9 am, ended at 1pm.

Before leaving, His Majesty was again surrounded by members of the public.

But this time they were students of the Jefri Bolkiah Engineering College.

Dozens of students, male and female alike, rushed to the field when they saw His Majesty was about to board the helicopter.

They were thrilled to meet His Majesty, some even posed with the Brunei Monarch for photo taking opportunity. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
