Foreign worker sent home for complaining about late pay
By Rosli Abidin Yahya

A female restaurant worker in Menglait, Gadong was allegedly sent home after she complained to her embassy that she and her co-workers had not been allegedly paid for the past seven to ten months.

A source said the foreign worker was only exercising her rights as she needed her salary on time to support her family back home.

She was reportedly paid in full accompanied by a letter terminating her contract and a one-way ticket back home.

Her co-workers did not dare to complain to their embassies because they did not want to lose their jobs.

When approached, the workers claimed they had not received their salaries, ranging from seven to ten months. They claimed that they were given a little money when they asked to purchase their basic needs such as toiletries.

"We have not sent money home to our families who are expecting our support. We cannot complain because we are frightened we may be sent home too," said some of the workers.

"It is hard for us to come back here to find a new job since we have been paying a lot of money to our agencies in order to get this job."

Observers called for strict regulations such as hauling errant employers to courts if they do not pay their workers on time.
