Malaysia, Brunei Wage Joint War
Against Drug Abuse

Begawan - Drug enforcement agencies of Brunei Darussalam and
Malaysia have joined hands to quell the menace of drugs through
prevention education and rehabilitation besides sharing information
and formulate strategies to curb smuggling activities.
The Narcotics Control Bureau under
the Prime Minister's Office, together with the Narcotics Department of
the Royal Police Force Malaysia, yesterday morning held its 7th Work
Group Meeting at the Conference Room of The Empire Hotel and Country
Club.
Leading the Brunei Narcotics Control
Bureau's 10-member delegation was Awang Haji Roslan bin Haji Suhaili, Assistant Director of Enforcement
and Intelligence Unit.The six-member delegation of the
Narcotics Department of the Royal Police Force Malaysia was headed by
P/ SAC 2 Noor Rashid bin Ibrahim, Deputy Director 3. Both senior
officers co-chaired the Work Group Meeting.
The 7th Work Group Meeting was aimed
at enhancing the bilateral cooperation between the two agencies and, at
the same time, expanding the scope of their cooperation to include
treatment, recovery and education on drug prevention.
The main agendum of the meeting was to
formulate ways to balance measures from the view of curbing both
supply and demand, which called for the cooperation of both agencies.
Other agenda included the increase in opportunities to attend
relevant training and courses in respective work fields.
In an interview, Awang Haji Roslan stated that the main objective of the meeting was to
strengthen the cooperative relationship between the two agencies as
well as to tackle the problems faced such as information sharing and
gathering on drug-related activities and formulate strategies in
countering drug trafficking through sea.
Awang
Haj i Roslan expressed hope in finding effective strategies in
achieving the shared aims and objectives of the two agencies and added
that the scourge is not only a problem faced by the two countries and
its neighbours but is a global concern.
When asked on the level of drug
problem in Brunei, he said, that it is under control and urged for
cooperation from all members of the public in alerting the Bureau of
drug-related activities.
Yesterday's Work Group Meeting will
be followed by a Bilateral Meeting between the two agencies today to
be co-chaired by Awang Haji Abdul Majid bin Mangarsah, the Acting Director of the Narcotics Control Bureau, and Dato Najib bin Abdul Aziz, the
Director of Narcotics Department of the Royal Police Malaysia.
The Bilateral Meeting will finalise issues that were raised in
yesterday's Work Group Meeting. --
