Once Upon A Time With Us Ambassador
By Narissa Noor

Bandar Seri Begawan - Mabohai Primary School yesterday morning received a generous book donation from the US Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam, Emil M Skodon, with the hope of opening the children's minds.

The school's principal, Cikgu Noorzinah Hj Hassan, was presented with 55 books from the Scholastic series ranging from fiction to biographies to teaching resources.

Complementing the growing importance of reading programmes within Brunei's educational system, the ambassador hopes that the books would

not only encourage the children to read more but to arouse their curiosity of the world and learn about other cultures while representing their own.

The morning also saw a heart-warming sight as the ambassador read the book, "The Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle, to a group of bright-eyed Primary One students.

Later, Mr Skodon was taken on a tour of the school library. The donation would be an addition to the 16,000 books already on its shelves, with more than half of them in English, to accommodate the reading needs of the school's 436 students.

The Ministry of Education is constantly working to instil the importance of reading in the children of our society through programmes like SMILE (School Motivated In Learning English), which encourages students to borrow books that have been recommended by their teachers and to read at home with their families. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
