BSDI To Open Up Business Opportunities For Smes
By Lyna Mohamad

Bandar Seri Begawan - The 'Brunei Darussalam Spatial Data Infrastructure' (BSDI) is a national framework that provides geospatial data usage and sharing services among government agencies, the private sector and the public through a 'Clearing House' window.

It is also serves as a source to the `BSDI System Centre' for the management and production of geospatial data in electronic media.

On realising the importance of the need to change and develop the geospatial data, the BSDI was established through the 'e-Map' project as a mandatory component in the project, which was initiated by three departments namely Survey Department, Land Department, and Town & Country Planning Department.

The Minister of Development, Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awg Hj Abdullah Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar officiated the launch of the BSDI yesterday morning.

Citing the findings of research done by GeoScience Australia last year, the minister said that the 'Spatial Enablement Government' could lead to improved decision-making, cut down the cost of government administration and increase industrial development opportunities.

Pehin Dato Hj Abdullah hoped that usage of the BSDI would be adopted by all departments under the Ministry of Development, as this could help expedite and assist them with their respective daily work responsibilities.

For example, Public Works Department engineers could monitor and maintain the roads in the country more efficiently by downloading the latest data from the BSDI.

Meanwhile, the minister said that the new spatial data infrastructure would be able to help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the country grow like those in advanced countries such as Australia. He said that this vision could be achieved within a two-year time frame.

Through the BSDI, outsiders will also be able to "see" business opportunities without having to visit the actual location.

The BSDI is not just for companies who are involved in spatial world. It can also be useful for those in the private sector including banks, transportation, agriculture, tourism and real estate. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
