Restaurant Worker Dies In Another
Case Of Sudden Death
By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A 34-year-old Indonesian working in a popular
restaurant in Gadong died of sudden death on Sunday evening at the
staff house in No 10, Simpang 5.
The police said yesterday that he
arrived in Brunei a few days ago to work.
His colleague found him dead when
they were about to wake him up to perform the dusk prayers at around
6.45pm.
The police ruled out any foul play
and said he died of a heart attack.
Sudden deaths are not new in
Brunei.
The police once in a while receive
reports of young foreign workers in the prime of their lives passing
away, mostly of illnesses such as a cardiovascular condition.
A week ago, a 46-year-old foreigner
died of liver cancer, while a local man also succumbed to a sudden
death in early April.
Local health experts advocate
having a balanced diet, exercise, proper stress management and
keeping a close eye on blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol
levels.
Highlighting the sudden deaths, a
foreign news report from Singapore revealed that the challenge for
doctors is how to prevent sudden deaths, if it is even preventable
in the first place. To this end, it would be useful to identify high
risk groups and then put in place measures to educate them on the
possible dangers.
A pertinent and obvious area to
explore is the lifestyle of the victims. The victims often had
congenital or underlying heart conditions that they were not aware
of.
In the United States, the American
Heart Association has found that when sudden deaths occur in young
adults, especially those who are active, the adrenaline released
during intense physical activity often acts as a trigger when these
abnormalities are present. However, this is not to say that athletic
activity is a no-go. If anything, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is
important. -- Courtesy of Borneo
