By James Kon
Bandar Seri
Begawan - An estimated $50,000 worth of property was gutted
and around 20 people from four families were made homeless after
their house was engulfed in flames late yesterday morning.
However, no one was injured in the
fire which broke out at around 11.13am at the house owned by Haji
Hamdani bin Hj Yahya in Kg Jaya Setia, Perpindahan Berakas.
The swift action of the
firefighters managed to save two-thirds of the wooden house, which
was believed to have been constructed 50 years ago.
Senior Superintendent Ranee bin Hj
Othman, the Commanding Officer of Operasi 'C', said "After we
received the distress call at 11.13am, two fire engines with 13
personnel arrived at the scene within two minutes to battle the
blaze.
"And within six minutes, we managed
to control the situation," he added.
An investigation team revealed that
the cause of the fire came from the old ballasts of fluorescent
lamps.
Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent
Ranee reminded the public to switch off all electrical items before
leaving the house and not to leave any pots or pans cooking on the
stove unattended to avoid fire mishaps.
Also present at the scene was Awang
Haji Yahya bin Hj Abd Rahman, the Director of Fire and Rescue
Department. -- Courtesy of Borneo
