College of Nursing's courses are ready to compete with their
overseas counterparts, be it in the form of "Specialty Nursing" or
basic courses in Nursing or Midwifery. The Acting Principal of the
college, Hj Julaihi Hj Abdul Latip stated this at the 14th
Convocation of the Nursing College yesterday.
Some 106 students received their
certificates from Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Rashidah
Sa'adatul Bolkiah, of whom six also received special awards in
recognition for their hard work.
This award is eligible only for
students who have maintained a very high standard of achievement
throughout their programme in the academic, clinical practice and
professional behaviour.
The acting principal said that in
the 21st century, globalisation has played an important and
challenging, competitive arena for individuals and organisations.
Deriving his speech from the basis of
'Human Capacity Building', he
suggested that there wasa current need for being adaptable with the
current constant change.
A few of the new graduates spoke to
The Brunei Times on their plans for the future.
For Siti Fauziah
Jamil, who graduated with a Diploma in Operations Theatre, she
places high hope in gaining employment with the Ministry of Health. However she admitted that she has a
feeling that she has only a fifty-fifty chance of achieving it.
But she said she has a backup plan
which is to apply for work with the Jerudong Park Medical Centre
too.
Unlike Hjh Ummi Athiyah Hj Awang,
recipient of a Pediatric Nursing Diploma, who enthusiastically
stated that she has a high amount of faith in the relevant
authorities saw herself as "very confident in gaining a job from the
Ministry of Health".
She also said that the employment
opportunities for nursing graduates "seem to be improving and there
appears to be more (graduates) getting more jobs within a shorter
period post-graduation".
SLD Muhammad Zainuddin Hi Muhammad
Nuh, an inservice student from the Royal Brunei Armed Forces has no
qualms as to his career opportunities as he considers himself lucky
to already be employed. However, in terms of his future plans, he
hopes to further his studies in sports medicine.
