Accelerated Learning Lessons At
SMSUA

Begawan - Sayyidina Umar Al-Khattab Secondary School (SMSUA)
yesterday held the first of a two-day programme for its students,
which focuses on study skills using Accelerated Learning.
Held at the school multipurpose
hall, the programme has drawn the participation of 226 Form V
students. This is the first time such a programme is carried out in
a school locally, and it is hoped that it will enhance the study
skills of the students.
The invited speaker for the event
was Muhaini binti Musa, who is from Malaysia and holds a Bachelor's
Degree in Counselling.
Muhaini
is currently a district manager, running her own sales team in a
financial services organisation. She also has a Diploma in Science
(majoring' in Physics) and is a Certified Personality Plus® Trainer
(USA).
Additionally, she has many certifications in different
fields. This includes the Thomas Management International Systems,
which focuses on psychometric instrument for identifying personal
profiles.
She has published articles on
counsellingin the Pertanika Journal, Universiti Pertanian Malaysia
(1991), and Career Development Quarterly, USA (Spring 2002).
Muhaini
has offered over 400 training sessions with children, adults,
housewives, executive managers, general managers and CEOs.
The trainings involve strategic
leadership, performance management system, counselling skills, study
skills, mind mapping and personality plus.
Among goes present were Career and
Guidance Counselling Unit Officer Hjh Rokayah binti Hj Tawe,
counselling officers, Principal Ckg Hj Juma'at bin Salleh, deputy
principals and teachers.
The programme commenced with an
ice-breaker, where the participants competed in quizzes and Science
tests to understand the functions of the right and left sides of the
brain.
Later, the students were shown the
correct breathing techniques as sufficient oxygen supply to the
brain is crucial for the brain to work at its best.
The students were also enlightened
on study skills and the three basic elements: Emotional State/The
State Management - Emotions are important in human life, our
feelings control out physical and mental resources; Daily Emotional
Conditioning, where your state relates to your physical well-being,
thoughts and emotions; and, The Self Beliefs, The Tools and
Techniques.
Achievement stars were awarded to
groups and individual students who actively participated in the
activities.
The students were later introduced
to Accelerated Learning, which covered three aspects, among them:
Multiple Intelligence - where the students had to look deep into
themselves, into which areas they are good at. This included verbal/linguistic,
musical/rhythmic, logical mathematics, visual spatial and bodily
kinesthetic.
Group activities were also
conducted for each of the activities. The programme was stimulating
and beneficial to the students.
