Woman Fined $3 000 Over Illegal Maid

Bandar Seri Begawan - A 48-year-old Malaysian woman was fined $3,000 or in default two months' imprisonment by the Bandar Magistrate's Court yesterday after she pleaded guilty to employing an Indonesian who is not under her sponsorship.

Goh Giok Be admitted to giving work as an `amah' to Siti Kholifah who was found to be an employee of another person.

The court was told that the Indonesian woman was found during a joint operation conducted by officers from the Brunei-Muara District Office, Labour Department and Immigration Department to inspect workers of Tai Wen Agricultural Co located in Kampong Bengkurong Masin on March 5 this year.

The Immigration Prosecutor said the defendant employed the Indonesian woman since November 22 last year. The defendant who is an employee of the agricultural company paid the fine. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
