Police Seek Private Companies'
Help To Stem Rising Crime
By Amin Hosni
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Muara Police Station held a meeting with 20
representatives from various private companies yesterday at the
police station to find a way for the police and private companies to
increase awareness and safety of the Muara District residents and
also to highlight crime prevention efforts.
DSP Mohd Hadini bin Hj Othman,
Acting Commanding Officer of Muara Police District, spoke at the
event.
DSP Mohd Hadini said that this year
alone, Muara Police Station has received 85 crime cases up to April.
Muara Police Station has authority
over parts of Tanah Jambu, Mentiri Highway and Mentiri housing
schemes, which have a population of around 3,000.
DSP Mohd Hadini also said that it
was found during investigations that an employee committed suicide
because the company paid late wages. The welfare of employees should
remain paramount, he said.
He also noted that cases of
fighting were also on the rise and cable thefts as well as break-ins
were also increasing.
"Cable theft is definitely on the
rise and has become quite unpredictable. The stealing trend, too,
has seen a shift with more reports of break-ins occurring in broad
daylight, with the main target being cashboxes and mobile top-up
cards," said DSP Mohd Hadini.
"There are roughly 4,000 police
personnel for a population of close to 400,000. The police alone
cannot help bring down the crime rate and that is why we are asking
for cooperation from private companies and the public to work
hand-in-hand to reduce crime."
Social gatherings also account for
some of the causes of crimes among the community. Neighbours call
the police who find undeclared alcoholic beverages.
Opinions from representatives
included installing CCTVs to deter crime and to use footages for
evidence.
DSP Mohd Hadini also advised those
using bicycles to use helmets and urged truck, bus and tanker
drivers to follow road and speed regulations.
Applications to seek permission for
social gatherings can be found at the police station. The fee is
only $2 and the application must be sent at least two weeks in
advance. The public can call 2272253 for more information. -- Courtesy of Borneo
