Immigration Recruits Briefed On
Duties
By Achong Tanjong
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Newly recruited immigration officers have been
urged to be committed to their tasks and responsibilities to enhance
efficiency and professionalism, said Director-General of Public
Service, Awg Sa Bali Abas.
He talked to 13 newly recruited
immigration officers on a study visit to the Public Service
Department as part of the induction course.
He reminded the officers not to
abuse the immigration stamp, which is the most important weapon of
an immigration officer. "The Police and Army have pistols and guns
but as immigration officers you have a stamp," he said.
"Even though you are only holding a
stamp, if you abuse the stamp due to carelessness, for example by
stamping the passport of a blacklisted person's entry, it might
cause problems to the country," he said.
He told them not to be neglectful
in implementing your tasks and responsibilities because your mistake
would cause a loss to other parties concerned.
Awg
Sa Bali Abas, former Director of Immigration and National
Registration, said the department is in the business dealing with
the public on immigration- related matters.
He said the Public Service
Department was established to give services to the public. He
advised the officers not to be selective (Pilih Bulu) but to treat
everyone equally. He added that the best service is not only given
quick and faster, but the policy of the department also observes the
creativity of the services.
He told them to show discipline,
courtesy when executing their duties and keep the good image and
capability of the department, and public service as a whole.
"There are more than 40,000
government officers and staff including all of you," he said, adding
that they should appreciate their positions because nowadays it is
not easy to find a job.
The induction course was organised
by the department, which aims to increase their knowledge and
experience. The participants also heard a briefing on the functions
and roles of the Public Services Departmeht presented by Awg Haji
Abdul Hamid, Acting Senior Administrative Officer, as Head of the
Quality Development and Management Unit.
Exposure to the core business of
the Public Service Department as one of the core agencies dealing
with human resource of the whole civil service is most relevant to
these newly-recruited officers.
This is because the Public Service
Department is the authority on service regulations and is also the
agency controlling the benefits and facilities offered to government
servants such as housing and pensions. Through such briefings,
government servants are able to share information and exchange ideas
within a learning organisation environment that is constructive and
enriching.
Yesterday's visit was part of the
Public Service Department's effort to disseminate information about
its key roles and functions as a central agency, which controls
service regulations, facilities and benefits of civil servants.
The interest showed by government
agencies to include the Public Service Department as one of their
agendas in an induction programmereflects- the department's
continued relevance as a core reference and expert in administrative
affairs and public management in government.
