Syariah Laws Explained To Belait
Village Chiefs

Begawan - A meeting held yesterday morning outlined the roles
of village chiefs and heads in relation with the Syariah Affairs
Department and shared views and information on Syariah laws.
On Aqidah Control, Dayang Hajah
Nurhanisah binte Abdullah explained the characteristics of Islamic
deviants and the causes of widespread religious divergence.
On the roles of the Family
Counselling Unit, Dayang Rohhaslinda binte Haji Yahya noted that
cooperation with village chiefs and heads in handling domestic
problems at the early stage are required prior to the lodging of an
official report to the Religious Family Counselling Unit.
The Family Counselling Unit handles
pre-solemnisation courses and issues certificates, handles polygamy
applications, family counselling, divorce-related applications and
reports from couples in prison or rehabilitation centre.
On the roles of Halal Food Control
Section, Dayang Zurina Salwa binte Haji Osman talked on the
establishment of Halal meat Import Permit Issuing Board.
The formation of the board in 1993
ensures that imported meat are obtained from halal slaughterhouses
accredited by the Brunei Islamic Religious Councils; all food items
distributed in the country are based on halal by-products;
supervises and monitors animal slaughterhouses that are granted
halal certification by the Syariah Affairs Department and enforces
the Halal Meat Emergency Order 1998. The Board has been renamed the
Halal Haram Section since January 2000.
The village chiefs and heads were
briefed on the Religious Affairs Section by Awang Ontong bin Asmat
whose jurisdiction encompasses drinking, purchasing, selling
intoxicating beverages in public place; eating/drinking/smoking in
public during Ramadhan month; Khalwat or (unmarried couple caught
