By Izam Said Ya’akub

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Minister of Development spelt out that the main challenge facing his ministry in its effort to realise its vision and become an `Organisation of Choice' is how to develop the skills according to the needs of the individual and the organisation.

Minister of Development, Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awg Hj Abdullah Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar believes that if they can overcome this challenge, the Ministry of Development will become an `Organisation of First Choice', in executing physical development of the nation and all that is peripheral towards the development of the country.

"I would like to see each member of this ministry to be amongst the best and possess the skills needed in the professional field and the technical specialisation in line with the ministry's reputation as the largest technical organisation within the government," said the minister.

"I have the utmost confidence that the heads of department, senior officers and members of staff will rise up to this challenge, and seriously work towards achieving the means to an end."

In the speech he also laid out the main values and characteristics which fall under three main categories: attitude, skills and knowledge. The minister feels that at various stages of ones' career development they will be called upon in various ways.

"As a person excels in their career, the three components fill in the reliance towards the knowledge bank lessens, however the need for certain skills is increasing, particularly in managing work, making decisions, managing people,. communication and leadership skills," said the minister.

"As such the appropriate focus must be given towards the development of these skills or expertise," he added.
