Reducing Tooth Decay Among Pupils

Bandar Seri Begawan - According to research on dental care, Brunei Darussalam is among the countries whose nationals suffer the highest number of dental decay.

The Ministry of Education and the Denture Section at the Ministry of Health have organised the ‘Tooth Brushing Drill' as a pilot project for pre- and primary students starting this month.

A three-day seminar on oral health to encourage fluoride tooth brushing took place yesterday afternoon for teachers in Sekolah Rendah Paduka Seri Begawan SOAS Kuala Belait.

Senior Education Officer from Belait Department of Schools Cikgu Haji Ramlee Abd Rahman said the objectives are to increase awareness and students' attention on the importance of oral care and to decrease tooth decaying problems among primary students.

Sekolah Rendah Paduka Seri Begawan SOAS was selected for the first phase of the project in Belait.

In the seminar, which ends on Thursday, specialists will deliver topics on dental health education; school based oral health promotion; teachers' role in promoting oral health in schools and effective tooth brushing techniques.

"The joint efforts in the project are a continuous step in securing dental health particularly among students.

"With such knowledge on the importance of dental care, it would further strengthen and create a dental health status in the country in line with the requirement of the World Health Organisation," said Cikgu Haji Ramlee.

He urged teachers to participate in the seminar and share information delivered by the specialists to ensure that dental care among primary schools students in the district are maintained.

The first phase of the pilot project encompass briefings on the importance of dental care, students' role in dental promotion apart from displaying good and bad food for better oral care to teachers.

It will continue with activities for students on proper brushing techniques and right methods on dental flossing and selecting the best fluoride toothpaste.

There will be an oral health seminar and tooth brushing drill at Sekolah Rendah Selangan Temburong on April 22, Sekolah Rendah Tutong on April 28 and Sekolah Rendah Dato Md Yassin BSB on May 7. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
