Bruneians Sign Up For Gold Award
Group At JIS
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Six Jerudong International School students are the
first Bruneians to sign up for the prestigious Gold "International
(or Duke of Edinburgh's) Award", according to a press release.
JIS
said it is committed to sending future groups to the world's poorest
continent to take up the challenge of the Gold Award.
A second group of 18 students,
including six Bruneian nationals, will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro
(at 5895m the highest peak in Africa, higher than Mt Everest's Base
Camp) and helping local Masai in Tanzania to clear some land for a
community area.
The first JIS Gold Award group of
twelve students visited Kenya in July 2007, climbed Mount Kenya (at
5895m, Africa's second highest peak) and refurbished a Masai Bush
School.
They also had to complete 12 months
of community service, regularly practiced a skill and followed a
course of physical recreation.
Jerudong
International School is an independent operating authority for the
international award in the Asia Pacific region.
The Bronze Award has been running
at JIS for a number of years. In 2005 the Silver Award was
established.
In September 2006, the gold award
was introduced at JIS and into Brunei for the first time. -- Courtesy of Borneo
