Govt Schools To Get Connected
By Lyna Mohamad
Bandar Seri
Begawan - With a special emphasis on ICT towards achieving
the National Vision or Wawasan Brunei 2035, Brunei's Ministry of
Education has embarked on an ambitious project to wire-up all
schools under the ministry so that all students, teachers and staff
will be able to have network access to share the resources to
enhance their teaching-learning experience.

School Network Infrastructure or SNI
is one of the 29 projects under the e-Education flagship and 21
of the projects have been awarded since 2004. Ten of them have
been completed and another 10 are in implementation stages and
one is in the process of contract drafting.
Acting Director of ICT at the
Ministry of Education, Awg Hj Abd Rahim Derus, said this at the
contract signing ceremony of SNI for government primary,
secondary and religious schools yesterday.
He said SNI is a network
infrastructure to provide reliable and efficient network and
other related hardware and peripherals to all schools under the
MoE. The project will cover 123 government primary schools, 31
secondary schools and 50 religious institutions.

Idris Hj Abas, meanwhile, said the
Local Area Network (LAN) is the fundamental infrastructure for
IT and just like in construction, there must be a road to access
the construction site, thus LAN is the "road" for all ICT
activities.
With the network communications
in place, students, teachers and staff will not only be able to
have network access to share resources to enhance their
teaching-learning experience but also have access to MoE
learning and administration resources in the near future. |
"It is our aim to build our own
Brunei ICT workforce equipped with specialised skills in various
aspects of ICT in line with the National Vision or Wawasan Brunei
2035, which is to build and accomplish a well-educated and highly
skilled society and to build a first class education system that
provides opportunities for every citizen and resident to meet the
requirements of our changing economy and encourage life-long
learning." he said.
It is also aimed at improving the
quality of life by providing Bruneians with high standards of living
and political stability and to have a dynamic and sustainable
economy that provides the people with quality employment in both
public and private sectors. -- Courtesy
