Have Dress-Up Day To Promote Reading
By Erna Hj Sumardi
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Teachers from the various departments of Sekolah
Menengah Awang Semaun will get a chance to conduct activities that
aim to promote their subjects in the annual Department Week
programme. Recently, the English Department
and its 12 staff members organised a Dress-Up Day to the delight of
their students.
As reading is encouraged and promoted on a daily
basis at the school, the English Department this year also wanted to instil a love of fairytales and fantasies among the students. To do
this, its staff members dressed up as characters that could be
found in storybooks.
Ms Erna became the Ice Queen from
Narnia, Mr Syaf was Jack Sparrow, Ms Tati turned into Rudolph the
Reindeer, Hjh Naheed was Dracula, Shafeek Kamalie was the Phantom of
the Opera, Ms Hannah was Little Red Riding Hood, Ms Sara was
Goldilocks, Ms Sharon was Violet from Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory, Hjh Mahriah was Minnie Mouse and Mr Ben turned into Zorro.
Students who managed to name all
the characters correctly won themselves a $5 book voucher each from
Paul and Elizabeth bookstore.
In addition, the students were
entertained during the week with a live broadcast by Shafeek Kamalie
and a recording of some students interviewing shoppers at The Mall
in Gadong on the importance of reading and the English language. -- Courtesy of Borneo
