Brunei Popular At Opening Of
Phuket Bike Week Fest
By Mohammad Abdullah in Phuket
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The 14th Annual Phuket Bike Week Festival was off
to a flying start with many and various activities held. Brunei
Darussalam, a first-time participant of the event, was also
instantly recognised.
"I have always wanted to visit
Brunei but never had the opportunity. Now that we know some biker
brothers in Brunei, it would be easier to plan a trip," said Jas, a
biker from Langkawi, Malaysia. This was repeated several times
during the night by other bikers from around the globe.
"Even though we are a very small
group compared to the rest of the participants from other countries
that are taking part, we have been making contacts froth all around,
and we are pleasantly surprised at how interested the other bikers
are in Brunei," said Hj Abu Bakar Hj Md Arshad, leader of the Brunei
group.
Meanwhile, Ustaz Jifri Hj Abd
Rahman said that most of the participants were amazed and impressed
that bikers from Brunei are taking part in the event. After 13
years, Brunei had not sent any representative. The participating
Bruneian bikers come from the Darussalam Motorcycle Association (Pemoda).
"The bikers here wanted to know so
much about Brunei and its biking community. Most of the participants
have never been to the Sultanate, and I for one am proud to promote
my country to the rest of the world," he added.
Jaimi H Jaludin, an experienced
rider and an avid participant of such international events, said
that the Phuket festival is possibly one of the biggest and most
interesting he has ever been to. He added that if Brunei were able
to pull off an event like this, it would do wonders for its tourism
sector.
There are over 5,000 participants
from around the world taking part in the festival. This year, Brunei
is participating officially for the first time. The three-day event, which ends
today, has attracted bikers from around the globe to participate in
the event at the same time, while helping to promote Phuket as a
tourist destination. -- Courtesy of Borneo
