Conversion Ceremonies In Belait

- A local Chinese, Awang Joey Tan Liang Yue, 21, embraced
Islam yesterday after reciting the Syahadah in the presence of
officials from the Belait Dakwah Islamiah Unit.
Joey Tan now goes by his Muslim
name Awang Mohamad Nasrullah Joey Tan bin Abdullah. Working in a
private company and the younger of two siblings, Joey was attracted
to the religion after gaining knowledge and insights from his aunt,
who had also converted.
A Filipino woman, Maria Luwie
Huertas, a maid who has been working in the country for three years,
also converted during the same ceremony. She decided to convert to
the Islamic faith on her own accord. Dayang Maria is now known as
Dayang Faiqah Maisarah binte Abdullah.
The conversion ceremony took place
at the residence of Awang Jefri bin Haji Md Yusof at Lot 9076 Pandan
Satu, uncle ofAwang Mohamad Nasrullah and the employer of Dayang
Faiqah.
Meanwhile, a conversion ceremony
took place on Saturday in Kampong Tunggulian for eight people from
two Iban families.
The chief guest was Acting
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs Dato Paduka
Awang Haji Ishaaq bin Haji Abdullah.
The head of the family, Awang Lokom
Anak Anj an, 46, is now known as Awang Mohd Kamaluddin bin Abdul
Karim. His wife, Dayang Anak Ujan, now goes by her Muslim name
Dayang Mufhirah binti Abdullah, 44. They have three daughters aged
20, 17 and 14.
A 49-year-old widow, Dayang Lindu
Anak Anajang, recited the Syahadah and embraced the Islamic faith
along with his 20-year-old and 12-year-old sons.
Some 38 people have embraced Islam
