Bandar Seri Begawan - The Ministry of Religious Affairs is planning several measures to address the issue of abandoned babies in Brunei Darussalam, said Dato Paduka Hj Ishaaq Hj Abdullah acting permanent secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs here yesterday.

While addressing the launching ceremony of the book titled 'Issue of abandoning babies in Brunei Darussalam' at the Islamic Dakwah Centre here, the acting permanent secretary said: "Newborn babies are the Almighty's blessing and grace...we are entrusted with the responsibilities to look after them cherish them and give them shelter, love and affection."

The book launched by the the Brunei Women's Council is a product of the Islamic Dakwah Centre and it contains statistics, data and reasons behind the abandoning of babies as well as conclusions and ways to overcome the problem.

"God Almighty provided us with brains to think so that we may lead an orderly life, and yet the disheartening and sad fact remains that there are those who commit the outrageous and cruel act of abandoning or killing their babies who have done no wrong," said the acting permanent secretary.

Mothers abandon their children by killing their babies or leaving them alive at places such as dumpsters and trash-cans, he said.

The Women's Council has come up with a project to raise public awareness on issues pertaining to the abandonment of babies in the country., particularly involving the civil laws, syariah laws and punishment for such acts.

"The reason behind the project is to eliminate the incidence of abandoning babies in Brunei, a country where people usually lead their lives in accordance with the true teachings of Islam," said Datin Hjh Masni Hj Mohd Ali, chairperson of the Council's committee on social issues. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
