New Drug Rehabilitation Centre Ready
By Feb 2009

Tutong - There will be a new $17.5 million drug rehabilitation centre to accommodate about 150 drug inmates at Kampong Rupang in Tutong, following a foundation laying ceremony at the site yesterday.

Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Adanan Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Hj Mohd Yusof, the Minister of Home Affairs, was the guest of honour at the foundation laying ceremony on the 20 hectare site.

It is hoped that the new centre with its facilities will provide comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation services to drug offenders in the country.

Apart from creating a more comfortable working environment, the centre was also aimed to raise the performance of staff in fulfilling their responsibilities.

The ceremony also saw the project handover of the Kupang Drug Rehabilitation Centre from the Prison Department to the Narcotics Control Bureau of the Prime Minister's Office.

The Al-Islah Drug Rehabilitation Centre in Muara will be relocated to the new drug rehab centre at Kupang, once the building has been completed.

Scheduled to be completed in February 2009, the project started in last August and will have facilities such as hostels with rooms for up to 10 people, classrooms, library, computer room and workshops for wood work and welding activities.

An exhibition or sales office will also be available to display items made by the inmates and some of the products would be offered for sale to the public.

The building was designed to reflect a `kampong' or local village style environment, so that inmates feel at ease in this environment and would be fully rehabilitated.

The Al-Islah Drug Rehabilitation Centre began its operations on November 1, 1987, under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports' Department of Welfare Youth and Sport, and was later transferred to the Prisons Department on March 15, 1990.

The drug rehab centre project was initially under the Sixth National Development Plan, but was delayed to the Eighth National Development Plan. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
