UBD Students Share Experiences Of
Tokyo Trip
By Ben Ng
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Three students from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD)
yesterday presented a report on their recent trip to Japan where
they had the opportunity to discuss important issues on the economic
development for both Bandar Seri Begawan and Tokyo.
The excursion was organised by
Mitsubishi Corporation and sponsored by the Japan Brunei Friendship
Association (JBFA), and it saw three students - Mohd Tajul Ariffin
Hj Awang Mohd Salleh, Siti Mastura Fakhriah Hj Yunos and Mirany
Floridzah Abdul Rahman - spend five days in Japan, which sources 10
per cent of its energy from Brunei.
"First we stayed in Tokyo for a
day, then we went north to Sendai," said Mirany. The three of them
initially suffered from culture shock, she said. "Especially during
rush hour. Everyone's running around while we're just moving slowly
laughing to ourselves.
"Everything is automatic as well...
even the toilets!" she exclaimed. But the most interesting aspect of
the trip, she said, was the culture.
The Japanese tend to stress on
punctuality, which is in some ways admirable she said. "They're very
punctual when it comes to things, so we really were culturally
shocked."
The students who left Brunei in
December last year for their trip also visited the Sodegaura LNG
Terminals and the Tokyo Electric Energy Museum to learn more about
Brunei's number one export, LNG.
In Sendai, the students paid a
courtesy call on the Mayor of Sendai, while also taking time out to
visit the Tohoku Gakuin University. -- Courtesy of Borneo
