Lack Of Basic Foundation Leads To
Low Percentage In Maths Exams
By H Bat
Bandar Seri
Begawan - It is compulsory for all students to study
mathematics, as it is considered a core subject in the secondary
level.
However, a majority of students
still have difficulty in studying the subject, said Acting Assistant
Director of Secondary Schools Koh Hong Puah, in his speech during
the officiating of the eXplomaths Carnival 2008 at the school hall
of PIHM Serasa Secondary School yesterday morning.
In addition, observing from the
general examination results, students usually score lower
percentages in maths, especially in Lower Secondary Assessment (PMB)
and GCE '0' Levels.
The main reason for poor results is
the lack of basic knowledge in the subject, which causes students to
have difficulty in understanding the subject, hence making them lose
interest to learn.
The annual eXplomaths Carnival is
aimed to help instil interest of the subject among the students and
bring across the message that learning mathematics is fun.
The event is significant in the
Ministry of Education's efforts to improve the results in the
subject, especially in the PMB and '0' Levels, and activities like
these can help raise awareness and attract students towards the
subject, especially creative activities that help open the mind, he
added.
Apart from that, tests and exams of
higher standards are also required in mathematics to enter relevant
fields like science. In the business field, mathematics is seen as
an important subject and is favoured when looking for employment.
In that respect, students are
encouraged to take interest in the subject, so as to give themselves
unlimited opportunities. -- Courtesy of Borneo
