Glitch Blacks Out Gadong Shops For Several Hours
By Azaraimy HH

Bandar Seri Begawan - A power glitch caused a massive blackout for a few hours in some business outlets in the Gadong Properties area yesterday afternoon starting around 2pm.

Local electrical engineers restored the power at 5.15pm, using their own ingenuity to improvise ways to distribute the power from faulty hardware, it was understood.

Due to the importance, of Gadong, efforts to normalise power were made to the highest order. Also present to give a hand were the Director and Deputy Director of the Electrical Department themselves. And thanks to engineers, made up wholly of local talents, the electricity supply returned to normal in the shortest possible time, it was understood.

The blackout could have taken days to fix.

Some businesses in the Gadong commercial area continued to operate without power, while others preferred to close while the outage was being fixed.

The area houses a myriad of businesses, from exquisite boutiques to top-notch electronic suppliers, from high-street banking services to five-star hotels, from contemporary cafes and restaurants to high-end car dealers.

The importance of Gadong commercial zone can be summarised by events that unfolded during the blackout.

A few minutes of power were enough for some businesses like jewellery shops to take the necessary precaution and packed up for security reason.

The cinema in The Mall was also affected as customers had to leave the cinema prematurely. Some 100 tickets were refunded.

Some popular fast food outlets such as McDonald's also decided to close while the power was out. While others said that there was no reason to shut down as they could still operate in darkness.

Some shops such as supermarkets, which could lose a lot of sales in an hour, opted to use power generators during the blackout. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
