SMS About New Tactic Used By
Thieves Confirmed ‘Fake’

Begawan - The SMS alert about thieves using a child to trick
would-be victims to open the front door is not true, the police said
yesterday. The bogus SMS has been spreading like wildfire since last
Saturday night.
The Acting Head of Police Public
Relations, DSP Sharazuddin Hj Masri, warned the public that
spreading harmful SMS messages that create anxiety among the local
community is a serious offence.
Those found guilty of spreading
such false reports through the short messaging service could be
slapped with a $1,000 fine and jailed for up to a year under Chapter
148, Section 34 of the Public Order Act.
"Pls take note that if in the
middle of the nite there's a small kid who u donot know knock on yr
door 4 help, pls do not open and seek assistance from the police.
this is latest tactic of robbery which happened recently B careful.

877**** 4 help," the SMS read.
Meanwhile, the police said that
three men between the ages of 20 and 40 were arrested in connection
with a series of thefts.
According to the weekly police log,
there were a number of theft cases in the past four days.
Eleven cases were reported in
Lambak Kiri National Housing Scheme, Panaga, Km 9 in JIn Labu,
Jangsak, Sengkurong, Kg Kapok, Lorong 3 Selatan in Seria, Berakas as
well as a football field and government office in Gadong.
Eighteen signboards, cables, car
keys, jewellery, electrical appliances, karaoke sets, food, shoes,
cash, a Nokia mobile phone, a bicycle and a goal post were among the
items stolen.
The police also received a report
of a teenager who attempted to commit suicide. The teenager has been
admitted to RIPAS Mental Unit.
Among the other cases were
customs-related (5), drug abuse (4), immigration-related (3),
trespassing (2), assault (2), fraud (1), aggressive theft (1),
gambling involving a 50-year-old man (1), sudden death involving a
local man (1).
Over the past four days, 37 road
accidents were reported. Out of the 37 cases, 19 were
self-accidents, while the rest were vehicle collisions.
