Strictly Follow Halal Guidelines
By Liza Mohd

Bandar Seri Begawan - Restaurant owners are urged to seriously take into account regulations and guidelines of the country, particularly those related to halal food, in running their businesses.

Belait Chief Religious Officer Pg Hj Yunos bin Pg Hj Mohd Salleh, who was the guest of honour at the opening of the first Chicken King fast food franchise restaurant in Wisma Yakin Kampong Pandan, Kuala Belait, said yesterday morning.

"Restaurant owners encompass business licence holders, operations managers, as well as staff, waiters and waitresses. They play an important role in enforcing the country's regulations and guidelines. The public, too, need to cooperate in jointly dealing with dishonesty, misrepresentation and deriving profit through selfish motives to the extent of disregarding religious sensitivities of the country.

"This issue should be taken seriously particularly with the recent release of a controversial film, Fitna, through Internet

condemning Islam. And the recent news in the country with regards to the discovery of pork enzymes in food (dumplings) served to Muslims are currently the nation's hot topics," said Pg Hj Yunos.

"Incidents like these should not occur if one truly understands and scrutinises the real teachings of Islam. Also, Brunei's official religion is Islam, as reflected in the nation's concept of ‘Melayu, Islam, Beraja’ or MIB," he added.

"Therefore, it is obligatory for anyone staying in the country to always comply and concur with regulations, rules and guidelines of the country," the chief guest concluded.

Meanwhile, welcoming remarks were delivered by Dk Sulfiah binte Pg Abd Razak, the Managing Franchisee responsible for the operation of all Chicken King Outlets in the country.

The Master Franchisee in Brunei, Mrs Ho Kin Juan, told the Bulletin that the setting up of the first Chicken King branch in Belait is aimed at providing the residents with more family dining options and also adding to the variety of eateries in the district.

The opening of Chicken King has generated 27 jobs and Mrs Ho said the franchise fast food is giving priority to locals as the restaurant takes pride in widening the job scope for locals in the district and at the same time attracting tourists from neighbouring countries.

The setting up of the fast food branch took five months of preparation prior to the opening yesterday.

A contract signing ceremony, which provided exclusive ownership rights of Chicken King fast food chain in Brunei Darussalam to the Master Franchisee Mrs Ho, was signed on November 6 last year in the presence of Belait District Officer Awang Haji Mohammad bin Haji Abdul-Rahman.

Residents in the district were keen to sample over 50 food and drink choices available in the menu, the 'Chicken Steak Burger' in particular, as it is the signature dish in Malaysia.

Chicken King is a Western halal-themed Malaysian international fast food franchise restaurant and is a hybrid between KFC and Kenny Rogers with over 30 outlets in East and West Malaysia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, UAE, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
